Tenth cyclone bulletin for Mauritius issued at 1310 hours on Monday 20 February 2023.

At 1300 hours, intense tropical cyclone Freddy was centred about 140 km almost to the north of Cap Malheureux, in latitude 18.6 degrees south and longitude 57.9 degrees east.
The estimated central pressure of Freddy is around 930 hectopascals and the estimated wind gusts near its centre is about 280 km/h.

It is moving towards the west south west at a speed of about 30 km/h.

On this trajectory Freddy continues to dangerously approach Mauritius and represents a direct threat. Active cloud bands associated with Freddy have started to influence the weather in Mauritius. A further deterioration in the weather is expected and cyclonic conditions may prevail over the whole island in the coming hours.

Freddy is expected to pass at about 120 km at its closest distance to the north north west of Grand Bay at around 1700 hours.

The public in Mauritius is advised to maintain all precautions and to stay in safe places.

Weather will be overcast with scattered showers, moderate to heavy at times with thunderstorms.

Wind will blow from the south east at a speed of about 60 km/h, strengthening gradually with gusts reaching 120 km/h in the afternoon.

Sea will be high becoming phenomenal with heavy swells of the order of 7 metres beyond the reefs. As Freddy approaches Mauritius, storm surge will cause inundation in risk areas along the coasts. It is, therefore, strictly advised not to go at sea.
