COMMUNIQUE – OFFER OF SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP FOR 2022

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan is inviting applications from International students who wish to study in Japan as Undergraduate Students, Specialised Training College Students and Research Students (either regular students or non-regular students).

The Scholarship Scheme is tenable for enrolment in the following:

(i) Undergraduate Students
An undergraduate course at a university or for students who are receiving preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to placement at the university;

(ii) Research Students
A master’s course, a doctoral course, or a professional graduate course at a graduate school, or for students who are conducting research in a specialized field at an undergraduate department, graduate school, institute attached to a university, etc. without the aim of completing the course, or who are receiving preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to placement at the university, etc. (Excluding Young Leaders’ Program Students or Teacher Training Students);and

(iii) Specialised Training College Students
A post-secondary course at a specialised training college, or for students who are receiving preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to placement at the specialized training college.

Fields of Study

(i) Undergraduate Students
Those who apply for an undergraduate student must choose a “Field of Study (“Social Sciences and Humanities” or “Natural Sciences”), “Course” and “Major(s)”. Applicants may enter a first, second and third choice; More details on the field of study are available on the following website:

(ii) Research Students
Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field. Moreover, the fields of study must be in subjects which applicants will be able to study and research in graduate courses at Japanese universities.

(iii) Specialised training College Students
Those who apply for a specialized training college must choose a field of study in accordance with the following procedure and fill in “Preferred field of Study and subject in Japan” on the application form.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for fields of study that are specific to the prevailing scarcity areas and market demands of Mauritius and to courses that also appear on the List of Indicative Priority Fields of Study available for consultation on the Notice Board, Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Ground Floor, MITD House, Pont Fer, Phoenix and on the following website: http://ministry-education.govmu.org

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have been born on or after 2 April 1997 for undergraduate and specialised training, and on or after 2 April 1987 for research students.

Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese. Applicants must be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan. Applicants must also have the ability to do research and adapt to living in Japan.

Selected candidates will be expected to undergo a paper test and interview to ascertain their Language proficiencies in Japanese and English along with their subject knowledge. The result of the Japanese language examination will be used as reference for the Japanese language preparatory education to be provided after the grantee’s arrival in Japan.

An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible. However, persons with dual nationality who hold Japanese nationality and whose place of residence at the time of application is outside of Japan are eligible to apply as long as they choose the nationality of the foreign country and give up their Japanese nationality by the date of their arrival in Japan.

The completed application form along with all supporting documents should be submitted by registered mail to the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius, as per contact details below to reach it by 31st May 2021 at latest.
